Breckenridge: Cheap yet Popular Introduction to Colorado
Breckenridge was founded as a gold-mining town. New shopping malls and buildings have been added in similar style to the old clapboard buildings, and the town center can get lively in the evening. It is true that the slopes do not cover a huge area and that the town is rather spoiled by out-of-style buildings in parts and a rather Disneyesque feel to other parts. But it has skiing and boarding for all standards, and there are lots of other areas to try on day trips, some covered by a shared lift pass. There are so many slopes you can cover in a week for a minimum charge. It is also preferred because of its placement as the nearest major resort to Denver, so you’ll expect a relatively short transfer.
Savings Tip: There are four separate peaks around the area, but you might want to get a multi-day lift ticket that covers at least four resorts. Buses are free so it would be quite a deal.
Breckenridge Hotels to Stay at
Breckenridge is very popular among Colorado’s first-time visitors and it is easy to see and why. Denver is one of the closest resorts to Denver Airport, has slopes for all standards, usually excellent dry snow, good facilities for families, and good-value slope-side accommodations. Hotels and condominiums are spread over a wide, wooded area and are linked by regular free-shuttle buses, giving you a slice off your budget originally for transportation. Breckenridge boasts more slope-side lodging than any other Colorado resort. A lot of tour operators feature Breckenridge and it’s easy to arrange your own holiday, too. There are frequent bus transfers from Denver Airport but if you’re in a group of four it can be cheaper to hire a car. The Inn At Breckenridge is low cost and high quality with the best rustic rooms. The Doubletree Breckenridge is also a great accommodation option and it is only 5 minutes from main street. The Marriott Mountain Valley Lodge is within 1 minute to main street Breckenridge and only 5 minutes to the ski resort plus it is low on the nightly rate scale.
