Metro Hospitality Group is a trading division of Transmetro Corporation. It is a famous hotel operator of the Australian hotel chain Metro Hotels. The chain was founded in 1976 in Sydney, where it is headquartered. The man behind the company is John McEvoy, who is now the Chairman of the company and has also worked as the Chairman and the Managing Director of Transmetro Corporation Limited since 1979. However, from 2007 to 2015, George Bedwani served as the CEO of Metro Hotels. Peter Frawley participated in the operations in 2015, following George’s retirement. Peter is not the current Managing Director of the company. Under his operations, the company has comleted a total of 8 hotels in Sydney, 2 hotels in Gladstone, 1 hotel each in Ipswich, Perth, Darwin, and Groote Eylandt with 2 pubs in Adelaide and Sydney.
Going back to how it started, Metro Hotels actually planted its seeds with great acquisitions. Until 1988, Metro Hotels operated the landmark Canberra Rex Hotel where President of the United States Lyndon Johnson stayed in later in 1996. The Canberra Rex Hotel was eventually sold to Millie Phillips. Metro Hotels was more interested in The Tower Mill Hotel in Brisbane, so they acquired it in 1994. From then on, the acquisitions of the group grew bigger. Until 2017, Metro Hotels remains a competitive group in terms of expansions.
