Enua Airport – AIU Atiu
The Enua Airport is located in Atiu, Cook Islands. It is the second airport built in the whole island. Atiu means Land of the Birds in the native dialect. The island is part of the southern island group of the archipelago. Visiting Atiu will not be possible without this airport with AIU code. Yachts or ferries are not available. The first airport was built in 1944 but no train ever land on it because of the ongoing war. The second airport took two years to build the current airport. Tourists are increasing every year and mostly coming from Europe and the Americas.
Best Time to Visit
AIU-Enua Airport was built in the 70’s. It is situated in the plateau which a few km from the village. They realized that the runaway is too short so they build another runaway near the beach. The whole airport was built by the people of the island. Aircraft pay the landowners fees for the maintenance of the airport. Today, only small aircrafts are allowed to land in the airfield. Nearby cities include Mitiaro and Nukatere.

A few years after the airport was built, the first hotel appeared in the island. The main goal of the island is to attract eco-tourists who want to experience the beauty of the unspoilt island. The Atiu Bed & Breakfast (B&B) is a modern lodging offering private rooms with a view of a tropical garden. Kopeka Lodge is considered small refuge in the island for those who want peace and relaxation. It is a few minutes away from the village. You can also book a stay at the nearby Aututaki with Aitutaki Escape and the Tamanu Beach.
Cook Islands is accessible through other airports like Mauke Airport (MUK) and Mitiaro Airport (MOI).
