Alibag: A Must-See Tropical Destination
A part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Alibag, India is a coastal town that used to be a historic hinterland of Bene Israeli Jews. There is an interesting story behind its name. Ali, a Bene Israelite, used to live in a synagogue in the Israel Ali or Israel Lane area. He was a rich and influential man who owned a lot of mango and coconut plantations in his gardens. As a result, the locals referred to the place as “Alichi Bagh” or “Ali’s Garden” or “Alibag”.
Best Time to Visit
Tourists may want to visit Alibag in August, when two (2) of the most-awaited annual events— Pola and Nag Pancham— are celebrated. A rural, bull-worshipping festival, Pola happens every first week of August. Farmers decorate and worship their bulls, then plough and sow immediately the day after the celebration. In the following week, Nag Pancham, a religious festival, is observed. Locals offer honey and milk to Shesh Nag, the snake god. However, with a tropical climate, the ideal time to visit the town is during the months of February through May and October through December. It is best to avoid visiting Alibag during peak tourist season in the months of June, September, and December.
