American River: Of Oysters and Pelicans
American River, Australia is a town in South Australia located on Kangaroo Island. It is known locally as “The River” and was named after the American sealers that stayed on the island for four months. The town boasts of beautiful views of island’s Eastern Cove as well as mainland Australia. Tourists who visit American River today are after the many water activities that can be done in the place, Pelican watching, as well as a taste of the oysters that the town is known for. The nearest airport is a 23-minute drive away, the Kingscote Airport (KGC).

August is the best month to visit American River as it also happens to be the coolest month of the year. The busiest time for tourists on the island as well as the town is summertime. American River, Australia hotels are pretty easy to find when planning a visit to the town and are pretty much available even during the famous KI Cup Carnival hosted by Kangaroo Island annually.

Enjoy the views at Buick Point. Travelers can enjoy bird watching, cooling down by the beach, or simply relaxing and soaking in the sun. Another interesting place to visit is The Oyster Farm Shop, where travelers can taste the famous oysters the town is known for.
Stay at the beautiful Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, a hotel that overlooks the American River Bay. The rooms are traditional with some rooms having bay views or balconies. The Wanderers Rest of Kangaroo Island is more a guesthouse than a hotel but has beautiful views thanks to its location on the hillside.
