The airport has different IATA and FAA airport codes with the IATA code “ABO” already assigned to the Aboisso Airport in Côte d'Ivoire.

In World War II, the ARE-Antonio (Nery) Juarbe Pol Airport served the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force for antisubmarine patrols. The name of ARE was based on prominent Arecibo-born businessman and pilot Antonio Juarbe Pol. Along with his wife and two passengers, the businessman died on a flight from Isla Grande airport in San Juan to Arecibo on Mother’s Day in 1975. With an area of 178 acres, the airport is popular with the skydiving community with its light-sport aircraft and ultralights. It also houses a private skydiving school. As of 2016, ARE has 27 aircrafts and operates on an average 68 per day. Make sure to visit Aguacate and Aguadilla once you’ve arrived in the Antonio (Nery) Juarbe Pol Airport.
