Banska Stiavnica: A City where time stood still
In the central of the country, Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia is a town founded on the beautiful caldera after an active volcano collapsed. More specifically, the current, Banska Stiavnica, SK sits on Štiavnica Mountains. Time in this town seems to stand still with its antiquity and rustic vibe. It is as if the whole town is still in the medieval period when the town was at its peak. Banska Stiavnica, SK was the center of innovation in the mining industry before for its gold and silver mining. UNESCO was also keen on proclaiming the town and its surrounding landmarks as a World Heritage Site.

Slovakia has many unique festivals all year round. Banska Stiavnica, SK has this annual festival the Festival of Nice Music which highly matches theme of the town. The festival is an International Classical Music Festival in July.

Among the medieval buildings in Banska Stiavnica, SK, the Holy Church of St. Catherine is one of the Catholic structures that withstood time. There is also the New Castle or locally known as Nový zámok which is the highest point in the city. As you move along the city, stop by the Slovak Mining Museum - Jozef Kollar Gallery to see the history of the city. at present there are few hotels in the city but all are homey and rustic. The Hotel Grand Matej is a small B&B with a good view. In the city center there is also the Hotel Salamander with larger rooms and accommodating staff.
