Carthage: Home of Man-Made Lake
Carthage, South Dakota is a small town in Miner County. It was named after Carthage, New York. In 1882, Frank Ward from New York came to Dakota. After surveying the area, he brought his wife and daughter to live in the townsite. Originally, buildings were erected near the Redstone Creek but it was moved to a better location where the modern Carthage is located. Ward persuaded the Western Town Site Company to name it Carthage after his hometown. For years, the town started to develop. in 1910, a tragedy struck the town. Everything was burned down to ashes especially the business district. The town rose up slowly and began to prosper over the years
