The airport offered cross-channel services in as early as the 1950s, and was the base of Channel Air Bridge and Silver City Airways. The airport, which has an IATA code of CQF, resides 12 feet above sea level, and serves both cities of Calais and Dunkerque. Calais is best known as the region’s largest city, and serves as a major industrial hub. Dunkerque or Dunkirk is a city near the Belgian border, and is popular for its port and town hall.

The airport is best known as the landing place of the first electric plane to cross the English Channel in 2015, which involved an Airbus plane.
