Douglas, Alaska: Nature’s One-of-a-kind Paradise
Douglas is a community on Douglas Island in southeastern Alaska and was named after the Earl of Salisbury John Douglas. In 1881, gold was discovered and back then, Douglas had the largest low grade mine in the world. Today, Douglas offers an amazingly beautiful natural scenery and abundant wildlife. Douglas is accessible through the Juneau International Airport (JNU), which is 29 minutes away and located northwest of the central business district of Juneau.
Best Time to Visit
Long sunny days await you when you visit between May and August. This means you can enjoy all the outdoor activities in Douglas and its neighboring towns but you'll have to compete with tons of tourists (and cruise ship passengers) too. This peak period also implies pricey Douglas, AK rates for hotels and flights although you can save if you book in advance. December is off-season because of the extreme cold weather so it is the least expensive month to travel to Douglas.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Juneau is 11.7 miles away and there are tons of attractions like the Last Chance Mining Museum dedicated the history of the gold rush days. A must-see is one of the most popular tourist sites, the Mendenhall Glacier. Not to be missed is a hike to Nugget Falls located near the glacier. Be sure to bring your camera to capture all these natural wonders.
