Gaviao: A Municipality of Medieval Castles
Gaviao is a municipality of approximately 4,000 population located in the district of Portalegre of Alentejo Region, Portugal. Gaviao, Portugal consists of 4 major parishes: Belver, Comenda, Gaviao e Atalaia, and Margem. In the 15th century, Gavaio received a Carta de Foral from King D. Manuel I of Portugal, that it became an official holiday up to this day.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal months to visit Gaviao are from April to November, yet the busiest months would always fall from April to May. The most anticipated time of the year would fall in August, where the Beat Feat Festival is being celebrated, a festival held in the Comenda River Beach.

There are two main castles located in Gaviao. The first one is the Belver Castle, a Gothic-style castle that was built in the 14th century by King James II. Although used as a military prison between the 18th and the 20th century, still it made its way to be included as one of the island's main attractions.
