Built in 1970 and opened in 1972 as Aeropuerto de Granada, the Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport is located 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) west of Granada, Spain. It is 62.5 miles (100 kilometers) from Jaen, the city which forms part of its full name, established in 2006 in honor of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca who was born near Granada and became a world ambassador for Andalusia. Jaen was included in the name to promote it along with Granada’s importance in international tourist circuits.

It has one terminal building divided into departure and arrival areas, and handles over a million passengers a year. The departures hall can accommodate up to 486 passengers, with the boarding lounge able to handle 380 at a time. There are 12 check-in desks and four boarding gates. The arrivals area, which has three baggage carousels, a customs office, and police and civil guard offices, can hold 595 passengers. The main arrivals hall can handle 399 and has car rental offices, cash machines, a waiting area, meeting room facilities, and a VIP lounge for business passengers. The airport primarily handles domestic flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Tenerife, Melilla, and Palma de Mallorca, with seasonal international flights offered to Rome and Paris. Pinos Puente, Atarfe, Albolote, and Fargue are all within 15 minutes of Granada Airport.
