Helsinki-Malmi Airport- HEM-Helsinki-Malmi
Helsinki-Malmi Airport is a public airport operated by the Malmi Airfield Association serving the areas of Helsinki, Finland and its nearby regions. It opened back in December 1936 and served as the main airport in Helsinki and in the whole of Finland. Even though Helsinki Airport serves as the prime airport for local and international flights from the country, HEM Airport is still actively used in flight training and general aviation purposes. Closing the airport has always been debated over the years but has no concrete plans as of the moment.
Best Time to Visit
HEM-Helsinki-Malmi is one of the few airports in the world that were originally designed from the very beginning of the construction to be an international airport. The opening of the airport made it possible to and from the capital of Finland faster. The Finnish Air Force took over the airport during the Winter War and civilian traffic was moved to the other airfields in the country. It was returned and converted back to a public airport in 1946. It used to have two runways, both asphalt. Kerava and Lohja are the closest local destinations you can enjoy near the airport.
