Isabela: Town of Leaf Cheeses
Isabela, Puerto Rico is a municipality named after Isabella I of Castile. It is called “Jardin del Noroeste” or “Garden of the Northwest” because of the many wildflowers surrounding it. It is also called “El Pueblo de los Quesitos de Hoja” or “Town of Leaf Cheeses” because it is famous for its fresh, white cheese wrapped in banana leaves. To some, it is known as “Ciudad de los Gallitos” or “City of the Fighting Cocks” because cockfighting was common in the area, and the municipality is popular for the quality of its fighting cocks.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Isabela is during January through February, for the perfect weather. The busiest months are usually January, February, and May. Tourists are least likely to visit in November. One of the most anticipated events in the municipality is Fiesta de Reyes Isabelinos, which is held every January 5 and 6. It honors the three wise men, featuring a craft fair, fireworks, and parade.

Jobos Beach or Playa Jobos is one of the most popular attractions in the municipality. It is a famous, world-class surf destination. It hosted the Rip Curl Pro, a world tour surfing event in 2013. Tourists should also visit the Guajataca Tunnel, one of the most important works of the remnants of the national railway system. You can also visit the Guajataca Beach.
