The quaint city of Kesennuma, Japan is a part of the Miyagi Prefecture. As of a 2019 estimate, the city has a population of 61,112 people. The area that Kesennuma now stands on was part of Mutsu Province and evidence shows that it has been settled since the Jomon Period. The present-day city was formed in the 1950s. It was damaged during a 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Kesennuma is credited for being the country’s first ‘Slow Town’.
