Kosgoda: A Turtle Sanctuary
The small coastal town of Kosgodais located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It is home to a population of nearly 3,000 people. Kosgoda was associated long established with the production of cinnamon, cultivation, and fishing. The town is becoming one of the liveliest areas in Galle District due to its beautiful beaches, making it a perfect haven for watching birds, and boat ride trips. Kosgoda is mainly known for the project of conserving the sea turtle handled by Sri Lanka's Wildlife Protection Society.
Best Time to Visit
Visit Kosgoda from January to March or from June to September when the weather is a sunny holiday, which is comfortably warm. It's also an excellent time to visit the Sea Turtle Hatchery. You can book your stay at Hotel Riu, which is a 15-minute walk from the beach on Ahungalla Beach or the Walauwa the Villa Ahungalla, a three-star private resort. You can enjoy the sunset and witness the baby turtles released into the ocean.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the must-do in the area is to visit the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, where you'll see numbers of sweet enchanting turtles and learn about local efforts to conserve them. You can also take a boat safari ride to the Madu River and have a glimpse into prawn fishing, enjoy the fish therapy spa, visit a beautiful Buddhist temple, and an island called' Cinnamon Island' where you learn about cinnamon production and experience the process of extracting it.
