The airport’s code is KRK. It was opened for civil aviation in 1964 and it served as a military site till 1968. A new terminal was built in 1988 and was opened for public use in 1993. A modernization of Krakow John Paul II International Airport’s apron was undertaken in 1995. It is also in 1995 that the name was changed from Krakow-Balice Airport to Krakow John Paul II International Airport in honor of Pope John Paull II who served as Bishop of Krakow from 1963 till he was elected as pope in 1978. Further modernization of the airport was undertaken in 2002. A domestic terminal was opened in 2007.
