Londolovit Airport – LNV Lihir, Papua New Guinea
Lihir Island, the largest island in the Lihir group of islands in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland province, hosts the Londolovit Airport. Also known as Lihir Airport, it is a small public air facility serving a fairly remote part of the country. Lihir is a mining town that’s why the mining company on the island is highly dependent on the airport for the transporting of its personnel as well as equipment. In 2017, owners of the land where the airport stands threatened to close down the airport due to non-payment of compensation for use of land for years but it has been resolve since then.
Best Time to Visit
LNV-Lihir Airport is a basic airport with no-frills facility although it had undergone some significant rehabilitation in recent years to now include amenities like air conditioning and x-ray machines. There is also a renovated waiting area to accommodate more passengers especially since the airport has introduced a new international flight to Cairns, Australia. The airport features a short unpaved runway that can handle a small jet and other similarly-sized aircrafts. All flights leave in the morning before 7 a.m. The most popular in-bound destinations served by Airlines PNG and Air Niugini are Port Moresby, Rabaul, and Kavieng.
What to Do & Area Attractions
There are no big airports hotels within Lihir Island but travelers have the option to book one of the few smaller inns nearby. The Pokche Lodge is a wonderful example. If you wanted full-operational hotels, the 5-star Airways Hotel and the Grand Papua Hotel are actually far but wonderful options for your stay in Lihir.
