Maitland: The Medieval River Port Town of New South Wales
Maitland, New South Wales, Australia is a tiny city located in the Lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales lying on the banks of the Hunter River. Its name was derived from the one of the prime English Under Secretary in the late 18th century – Sir George Maitland. Maitland compromises of three separate areas that culminated into one during 1945. The city also served as an important port in the country during the early years.
Best Time to Visit
A humid subtropical climate is experienced in Maitland. Therefore, most days of the year it is relatively hot in the city. There are some months though that moderate to heavy rain showers and even flooding are expected. It is best to visit the city for some exploration during the middle of the year from May to August. Although, one of the major events in the city – the Hunter Valley Steamfest – which is about the steam railway industry and history of the city is celebrated every April 18 and 19.

The city boasts of its historical and environmental attractions. More on the environmental side, you should visit the vast green land of Maitland Park where you can enjoy a barbecue party or a lazy afternoon picnic.
