Eugenio María de Hostos Airport– MAZ Puerto Rico
Eugenio María de Hostos Airport is a medium-sized public airport owned by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. It is also referred to as Mayaguez Airport by locals, after its location in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Named afterthe Puerto Rican intellectual dubbed "El Gran Ciudadano de lasAméricas" (translated as The Great Citizen of the Americas), the Eugenio María de Hostos Airport offers domestic commercial services to a limited degree, as a part of the Essential Air Service subsidy program by the U.S. government. MAZ Airport used to be the main air entryway to Puerto Rico’s western region, but that position has since been taken by the Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla. Eugenio María de Hostos Airport currently handles flights to and from San Juan through Cape Air.
Best Time to Visit
MAZ Airport has one asphalt runway that measures 1,523 meters long and 30 meters wide. Because the airport only has limited flights, the facility looks quite abandoned, with empty offices and concession stands. The local government had wanted to shut down the airport when airlines started to leave and the number of passengers went down, but clamor from the locals had saved MAZ Airport from being shut down totally. Visitors to barrios like Aguacate and Arenales can reach their destination thru MAZ Airport.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Many hotels can be found near the airport. One of these MAZ Airport hotels include the Holiday Inn Mayaguez and Tropical Casino, which is 1.4 miles away from the Eugenio María de Hostos Airport. Another accommodation provider, located 3.6 miles away is the Howard Johnson Downtown Mayaguez.
Guests who wish to fly to the western coast of Puerto Rico have more airlines and flights to choose from when they travel through Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN), the alternate airport in the region.
