Mission: More Than Meets The Eye
Mission, South Dakota is the biggest incorporated community lying on the Rosebud Indian Reservation – home to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe or Lakota people. Its named was derived from the many missions held by various religious groups back in the 19th century to help the tribes. Mission is now a haven for no greater than 2200 people. Though mostly a bedroom community, it is nearby many natural recreation sites.
Best Time to Visit
If it is not heavily raining over at Mission, SD then the city might be buried in deep snow. There is only a short time when the weather is warm in town and it is in the middle of the year. These months, from June to August, are also the peak months considering the aforementioned case of weather in the city. Mission hotels are also pricier during these times around.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Oyate Trail is the most popular and probably the only point of interest in Mission for now. It follows a trail with a picturesque view of the Black Hills. Other attractions are located in neighboring towns within a few minutes to a few hours away. The world famous Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a three-hour drive. A free admission children’s theme park is the Storybook Island where there are various theater stages playing different acts of children stories.
Quality Inn Rosebud Inn Casino, Comfort Inn Valentine, and Econo Lodge Inn and Suites are only three of the wonderful hotels near Mission you can stay at during your trip. These are all a few minutes away from the town proper.
