Nelspruit, Exploring the Citrus City of South Africa
Now formerly called as Mbombela, Nelspruit, South Africa is also known as the “Gateway to the Lowveld,” “eNaspoti,” and “Citrus City.” It is under the rule of the Mpumalanga province and also serves as the province’s capital. Mbombela was originally named as Nelspruit on its foundation in 1895. It was derived from the Nel brothers who were known to graze their cattle in the area every winter. It was only in 2009 when the city was renamed to Mbombela, which was named after the local municipality where the city belongs to.
Best Time to Visit
Nelspruit experiences generally pleasant weather all year-round, with only occasional rain showers here and there. June to August accommodates the most number of tourists. Come September, the city enters its spring season, and most of Nelspruit, South Africa hotels are discounted due to the slow tourism. There are fewer crowds in the town, although tourist population grows during the annual Mbombela Jazz Festival held at the first week of the month.
