Best Time to Visit
The history of Sunyani Airport dates back to the year 1942. It was used as a communication outpost and aerodrome by the Allied Forces back then. When the war ended, the airport was abandoned. It wasn’t until 1969 that the government initiated the construction of a full airport after it was deemed needed. The airport was completed by July 1974 and opened by the then Transport and Communications commissioner, Col. P.K. Agyekum. It has one runway but had limitations in terms of extension, making it unusable for medium range aircrafts. But plans are underway for the runway extension and enhancement. The airport has been closed since 2015 but its runway rehabilitation is set to be completed by the end of the year and the re-opening of the airport will follow. Tanoso, Chira, and Susanho are nearby towns that can benefit from the re-opening of NYI Airport.
