Oga: Home of the Legendary Namahage
Located in the Akita Prefecture in Japan is the city of Oga, Japan,which occupies land found within the boundaries of the Oga Quasi-National Park. It is the central town in the Oga peninsula, a rugged headland dotted with cliffs and a few volcanic crater lakes jutting into the Sea of Japan. Oga is approximately 18 miles northwest of the city of Akita.

January to April is considered the peak season in Oga as more tourists come to the city to explore its many attractions. Accordingly, prices for Oga hotels experience some surge pricing. Purchasing in advance is recommended for those who want to visit during these months. The end of December is also a busy period in Oga as it celebrates its famous unique traditional event Namahage, a folklore practice meant to take away misfortune and bring blessings for the new year.

While in Oga, visit the Goshado of Akagami Shrine by climbing up the 999 stone steps to reach its five prayer halls. Then swing by Namahage Museum housed in a spaciously modern landscaped facility as well as the adjacent Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum, which showcases the district's colorful and distinct namahage ritual.
