Ogaki: A Trip Back to the Edo Period
Ogaki, Japan is a city in Gifu established as a town in 1889. It received city status in 1918. The area originally developed as a castle town for Ogaki Domain during the Edo period.
Best Time to Visit
The perfect time to visit Ogaki is during the months of April through June and September through November, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of March, May, and October. Tourists are least likely to visit in July. One of the most famous events in the city is Basho Festival, which is held every November. It commemorates Matsuo Basho, a well-known haiku master during the Edo period. After all, the city is the last destination of Basho’s epic journey to northeastern Japan in the late 17th century. Another event to look forward to is Ogaki Festival, which is held every May. Featuring a yama or float parade, it came from the exchange and interaction of festival culture between eastern and western Japanese regions.

Gifu Castle in Gifu is one of the must-see attractions nearby. It was first constructed by the Nikaido clan in the early 13th century. Another must-see attraction is Sunomata Castle or Sunomata Ichiya Castle. It was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the mid-16th century. It makes for a great place to see cherry blossoms during spring.
