Rideau Centre faced significant controversy and opposition during its construction. This was mainly due to the inconvenience that the construction was going to give the surrounding community. There were also concerns about the increase in traffic once the shopping center opened. The Rideau Centre was supposed to be named the Rideau Eaton Center, about Eaton’s Department Store. Plans for the name changed were dropped after the department store met local opposition. Rideau Centre is easily accessible via the Mackenzie King Transitway Station.
