Shakawe: A Natural Paradise in Northwest Botswana
The village of Shakawe sits close to the border of Angola and Namibia. It is considered the entrance to the Tsodilo Hills, which is roughly 25 miles away from the town. Shakawe is marked with hot weather for six months with less frequent rains for the entirety of the year. Nature lovers will enjoy visiting Shakawe as the town lies close to the Moremi Game Reserve, found in the eastern section of Okavango Delta. The delta itself is has been declared as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa back in 2013. Around an hour’s drive from Shakawe is the Bwabwata National Park, where the famous Popa Falls is located. Although swimming is widely discouraged when in the falls, you can go hiking and bird watching while in the area.
Guests can find numerous inns and guesthouses within Shakawe, two of which are the Ditlhapi Guest House and Athoma Guest House. They are both roughly a mile or two from the city center and offer airport shuttles and en-suite amenities. There is also a restaurant at the Athoma Guest House where local meals are served.
