About Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group Shantou (and vicinity)
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is an international hotel chain offering luxury accommodations in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The hotel was founded in 1863 when Atkins Dyer and William West opened the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. The Mandarin part of the group is a recent history though. The Mandarin hotel opened in 1963 in Hong Kong Island. In 1974, Mandarin International Hotels Limited became a hotel management company whose main goal was to expand operations in Asia. In 1985, two hotels under the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group were built. In 1987, the company managed to get in the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group now operates a total of 41 hotels and 10,000+ rooms in 27 countries. The count includes even the ones under construction. One of the most unforgettable events in one of the hotels under this brand was actor and film producer Leslie Cheung’s suicide in 2003. She jumped from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental in Central, Hong Kong. In 2009, the Beijing Television Cultural Center which was to collaborate with a Mandarin Oriental Hotel caught fire. The cause was illegal fireworks during the Chinese New Year. The building was damaged and one fireman died from the incident.
