Best Time to Visit
The origin of the name Toncontin is unknown, but locals say that is derived from the Nahuati word ‘Tocotin’, a name of a sacred dance in Yucatan. TGU-Toncontin International Airport is infamous for having one of the most difficult approaches, especially in inclement weather due to its proximity to mountainous terrain. There have been attempts to replace the airport with the Soto Cano Airport, located in Comayagua. TGU has since been improved through the works of the Airport Corporation of Tegucigalpa. There is one runway with an asphalt surface. It sits at an elevation of 1,005 meters above mean sea level. Approach to the airport was made easier by bulldozing a portion of the hillside. Airlines that serve Toncontin International Airport include Aerolineas Sosa, American Airlines, Copa Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and more. You can easily access the Santa Lucia from the airport.
