Tirunelveli: An Intricate Temple City
Tirunelveli is a major, more or less 2000-year old Indian city. Formerly known as Tinnevelly during the British occupation, this ancient city is beaming with historical and heritage significance. Its name now translates into “Sacred Paddy Hedge.” Along with the many temples and shrines, Tirunelveli, India’s impressive natural and coastal surroundings also make up the reasons on why it is such a prominent tourist area.
Best Time to Visit
A tropical savannah climate with scorching hot and humid summer is prevalent in Tirunelveli, India. It is best to visit the city during the first half of the year when it is relatively dry and the sun is brightly shining. The colorful Car of Nelliappar Temple Festival takes place every June or July. Hence, during these months it is expected that there are a lot of visitors in the city and Tirunelveli hotels are pricey. The other half of the year, there is monsoon season bringing heavy rainfalls.

Located just 1.5 to 2.5 miles from the city center, you can find ample accommodations like the 4-star Hotel Aryaas, the Sree Bharani Hotels and the Hotel Applettree. Dedicated to Shivam, the exemplary, polychromatic Nelliappar Temple is a noteworthy attraction in town. One of the waterfalls best visited during summer is the Shivamathungai Falls. Although watch out, as many reports of the water not being abundant is received by the local tourism office every summer. Another great place to visit is the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve – a protected forest home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.
