Teniente General Benjamín Matienzo International Airport– TUC Tucuman
Set 7.5 miles east of San Miguel de Tucuman in northern Argentina, the Teniente General Benjamín Matienzo International Airport was built in 1981 and inaugurated on the 12th of October 1986. It was constructed to replace the old airport located on the Ninth of July Park, which posed risks to the city centre it was close to, and which also had very little space for expansion. That airport, which had just 5,200 feet (1,600 meters) of runway, was officially closed in 1987. Teniente General Benjamín Matienzo International Airport was named in honor of Benjamin Matienzo, an airman lieutenant in the Argentinian army, who perished in 1919, while making the first attempt to fly over the Andes from Mendoza to Chile.
Best Time to Visit
TUC’s current concrete runway is the result of a 2017 undertaking that extended it from its original length of 9,500 feet (2,900 meters) to 11,500 feet (3,500 meters). This made it the second longest runway in Argentina after Piloto Civil Norberto Fernández International Airport in Río Gallegos. It also has four departure and two arrival gates, immigration, passenger services, and the second largest cargo terminal in Argentina. The Departures Sector was rebuilt in 2005, with international flights facilities and a jet bridge. It can accommodate all kinds of aircraft, such as the Boeing 767, Airbus A330 or Boeing 777. TUC is an ideal airport for those heading to Banda del Rio Sali, San Miguel de Tucuman, Tucuman, Tafi Viejo, Yerba Buena, El Mollar, and Concepcion.
