Vienna, Georgia is the county seat of Dooly County established in 1826. Back then, it was known as “Berrien”. It became “Drayton” in 1833. Finally, it adopted its current name in 1841 after Vienna, Austria.
Best Time to Visit
The perfect time to visit Vienna is during the months of April through July and August through October, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of May through July. Tourists are least likely to visit in November. Every November, the famous Slosheye Trail Big Pig Jig is held. It is a state pork cook-off that began in 1982. A group of pig cookers came up with it by combining an arts and crafts fair, and a barbecue competition. It started with just 20 teams in 1982; and today, about a hundred teams participate.
What to Do & Area Attractions
When in the area, tourists should visit Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. It is a state-owned, multipurpose rental complex suitable for all kinds of functions, such as concerts, conferences, horse shows, meetings, rodeos, RV rallies, sporting events, trade shows, among others. It also hosts the Georgia National Fair every year. Another popular attraction nearby is Georgia Veterans State Park, a memorial to US veterans. Established in 1946, it has a museum featuring various artifacts from the Revolutionary War until today. It also has 82 campsites and 4 picnic shelters.
