Vienna, Illinois is the county seat of Johnson County platted in 1818. Originally, it was an Indian trading post. In 1837, it was incorporated as a village. It officially became a city in 1893.

Tourists are least likely to visit in December. One of the most famous events nearby is Goreville Freedom Fest in Goreville. Held every Fourth of July, it is intended to bring the community together to celebrate the birth of a nation.
