Wai: Where Bollywood Comes to Life
Wai, India used to be a prominent town during the days of the Peshwas (similar to a modern-day prime minister). Historically, Wai has always been a cultural center. Prominent families of old built temples in the town. One of the more famous temples is the Mandhardevi Kalubai, which is located 4,650 feet above sea level and is more than 400 years old. Many overlook Wai because of the more popular destinations, namely Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani. Other than Wai being a stopover to these destinations, it has also been used as a site for filming around 300 Bollywood as well as Marathi movies. Visitors bound for Wai will land at the Pune International Airport (PNQ), around 2 hours and 22 minutes away from the town.
Best Time to Visit
Wai can be visited practically any time of the year. However, travelers need to be mindful of the monsoon season because it makes the view from the town a bit cloudy. The best month to visit would have to be between the month of September and May when the weather is at its best. Wai, India hotels may be fully booked during the celebration of the local Krishnabai Utsav, a festival celebrated over 8 days.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Go hiking on the Pandavgad and appreciate the views along the way. Or, visit the Shri Maha Ganapati Temple, a famous temple that features a huge Ganesha statue. Another interesting place to visit in Wai is the Rajpuri Caves or Karthik Caves. These are sacred caves that have a Hindu temple.
When it comes to accommodations, there are several located near Wai. The Mount Castle Resort is in the nearby Panchgani. It is a simple hotel but offers free private parking and even has family rooms. Also located in Panchgani, Hotel Millenium Park is a more sophisticated option with modern rooms, swimming pool, and even a small children’s play area.
