Surprisingly, desert-like vegetation is what Wheatland looked like back in the old days. All of this changed in 1883 as local rancher Joseph M. Carey, together with several men living in the region decided to establish the Wyoming Development Company. Through the group’s efforts, Wheatland Flats the irrigation that it needed to become a profitable and thriving community. Wheatland’s schools became Edward Bryant’s sanctuary during his younger years. He was a known science fiction and fantasy author. Former Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer was also from the region. Wheatland, WY is also home to America’s first and largest private irrigation district.
