Alexandria, A Vibrant City in the Heart of Hanson County
Established as a city in 1885 in Hanson County, Alexandria, South Dakota is located in the heart of the county. It serves as the home of over 600 residents and the county seat as well. The former name of the area is Clarksville in honor of Dearborn Clark, the owner of the land where the city now stands. The post office of this community was founded in 1880. But when the town was incorporated five years later, the name was changed to Alexandria after a Democratic politician in Milwaukee, Alexander Mitchell. Alexandria is only 12 miles from the east of Mitchell.

If you’re coming into Alexandria, SD by September and is looking for the festivities, you can always drive to the nearby town of Mitchell, where the annual Holiday Arts Fall Craft Show is held.
