Altus: A Heart-Pumping Adventure in Southwest Oklahoma
Altus originally took the name Frazer before it was changed to Altus, a Latin name that is synonymous with “high place”. The name change was deemed appropriate after the town literally moved to a higher region after the devastating floor in the 1800s. Home to the Lake Altus-Lugert, the region is indeed one of the best regions in Oklahoma for boating, wildlife adventures, camping and scenic appreciation. The region is also the location of Altus Air Force Base since 1942 and serves as the training location for the US Air Force. The region is also the city’s biggest economic cornerstone. Nine schools are available in the region, with Western Oklahoma State College as one of the best schools in the area for higher education.
