Arlington, A Small City of Friendship and Arts in the East of South Dakota
Covering about 4.3 kilometers of land area, Arlington, South Dakota is a city of around a thousand residents. It is part of both Kingsbury and Brookings counties. The town was platted back in the late 1800s by the Western Town Lot Company. It was first called Nordland, with the streets in the area gaining Norwegian names. Five years later, Arlington received its new name which was after the colonial center in the state of Virginia. The streets were renamed too.
Best Time to Visit
Summer in Arlington, SD is one of the best seasons for a visit and also happens to be the busiest season too. Tourists pack to the city to join the Brookings Summer Arts Festival happening every July in the nearby town of Brookings. If you’d rather enjoy the city without the crowds, come by the fall when the tourist population is at its slowest and most of Arlington, SD hotels are discounted.
What to Do & Area Attractions
There are several museums and state attractions that can be easily reached when you’re in Arlington. If you’re traveling with kids and family, feel free to visit the Children’s Museum of South Dakota and the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. A walk around McCrory Gardens in Brookings, about 20 minutes away from the city, is also one of the favorite things to do while in the city. There are a ton of hotels and accommodations readily available in the nearby town of Brookings as well, some of which can be booked under $100/night. These hotels include the Quality Inn, Arlington Inn, and Super 8 by Wyndham Brookings.
