In Mercer County, Athens is a town in West Virgina United States. Being a college town, Athens has a classical name "Seat of Learning”, and was taken after Athens, Greece. It is situated above Laurel Creek, which is a tributary of the Bluestone River. Concord University is also its home. West Virginia traverses Athens, connecting the town with Princeton to the southwest and the rural towns along New River to the northeast.

While in just 12 minutes, tourists may also check and shop from Mercer Mall, the main shopping mall serving Bluefield, West Virginia.
