The Alexandroupoli Airport “Democritus” or “Dimokritos” is also known as the Alexandroupoli Democritus International Airport. It is located 7-kilometer east of the Alexandroupoli area on the northeastern side of Greece. The airport belongs to the Alexandroupoli municipality and it located near the Apalos village. The AXD – Demokritos International was named in honor of Abdera’s ancient philosopher, Democritus. It was built in 1944 and became an international airport in 1955. Its present runway and buildings were built in 1975.
