Barbuda Codrington Airport – BBQ Barbuda
Barbuda Codrington Airport, BBQ, is a small public airport that services the island of Codrington, Barbuda. It is the only airport on Codrington, which, prior to 2017, had an estimated population of only 1,300. It had a 10/28 paved runway at a length of only 1,640 feet. The airport had previously catered to six airlines – namely, ABM Air, Trans Anguilla Airways, FlyMontserrat, St Barth Commuter, Caribbean Helicopters, and Anguilla Air Services.
Best Time to Visit
The Barbuda Codrington Airport was unfortunately shut down in 2017 following the Category 5 devastation of Hurricane Irma. Irma was one of the most powerful hurricanes to make landfall in the U.S. and to seriously devastate the Caribbean. More than 1,000 residents had to be forcibly evacuated from their homes, while Barbuda suffered three casualties from the storm. The Barbuda Codrington Airport was completely shut down as a result until the authorities could accurately consider it safe to fly again. All its airlines were forced to suspend operations. The estimated total land area of Barbuda is only 62 square miles, thus, aside of the main town Codrington, there are few neighboring cities surrounding the Barbuda Codrington Airport. Natural sites that the townspeople of Codrington enjoyed included Darby’s Cave, and Pink Sands Beach.
