Île Art – Waala Airport – BMY
Much commonly referred to as Belep Islands Airport, Île Art – Waala Airport is a public-use airport found on the central part of Art Island (Île d'Art, New Caledonia), the biggest among the island group of Belep. It is assigned the IATA code of BMY and the ICAO airport code of NWWC. It primarily serves the commune of Belep, located in the North Province of New Caledonia.
Best Time to Visit
Although Île Art – Waala Airport is the only airport serving Art Island, there is currently only one airline serving the airfield. Air Caledonie, a domestic airline for New Caledonia, connects Belep Islands Airport to Koumac Airport on the town of Koumac on the main island of New Caledonia and Nouméa Magenta Airport on the village of Nouméa on the main island, as well. The archipelago of Belep has remained untouched for centuries now, making it thrive in its mysteriousness and natural beauty. If you’re coming into New Caledonia via Île Art – Waala Airport, make sure you explore the inhabited islands of Belep, most notably the Art Island, where you can find the small community of the indigenous groups of the Kanaks or métis.
What to Do & Area Attractions
While Art Island is packed with beautiful beaches, the island is yet to develop tourist amenities and accommodations. That said, the closest lodging spaces can be found on the main island of New Caledonia, some of which are around Koumac Airport. Chez Pascal and Claudia B&B and Hotel Karem Bay are both within 15 minutes from the airport.
