Barra Airport – BRR
Locally known as Port-adhair Bharraigh and Barra Eoligarry Airport, Barra Airport is a public airport located on the island of Barra, which is under the rule of the Outer Hebrides. Specifically, the airport can be found on the northern end of the island, near the bay of Traigh Mhòr. Barra Airport serves most of the towns on the island, including Castlebay, Scotland. It is currently operated by the Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, the same owner of the majority of the regional airports in the country. The airfield is assigned the IATA code of BRR and ICAO code of EGPR.
Best Time to Visit
Barra Eoligarry Airport was officially opened to the public in 1936. Among the airports across the globe, this regional airfield is the only one of its kind to use a tidal beach for a runway. There are a total of three sand runways in Barra Airport, all of which are over 2,000 feet in length. The three airstrips form a triangle and are marked with permanent wooden poles. The Twin Otters aircraft of Loganair airline can easily land into the runways during low tide. At high tide, the tracks are submerged, so flights depend primarily on the tide. Make sure to include the nearby town of Benbecula if you’re coming into Barra Island.
