Batticaloa International Airport - BTC
Batticaloa International Airport is a public and military airport owned by the Government of Sri Lanka. It is located in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka and operated by the airport and aviation services. BTC Airport also serves as a military base of the SAF Batticaloa or the Sri Lanka Air Force Batticaloa. Originally established as a domestic airport, it ceased functioning in 1979 during the collapse of Air Ceylon. Domestic flights resumed in 2018 and by 2019, the Batticaloa International Airport officially became Sri Lanka's 5th international airport.
Best Time to Visit
Batticaloa International Airport sits 3 meters above mean sea level. It originally opened in November 1958 and was under the Department of Civil Aviation. Air Ceylon was the first airline to operate domestic flights in the airport with the Ratmalana and Batticaloa route. The airport was redeveloped to be able to accommodate international flights after a decade. International flights were allowed in the airport in October 2019 but long-haul flights were still not allowed. Alliance Air and FitsAir already showed interest in serving international flights in the airport. Pasikuda is a nearby local downtown you can explore for recreation close to the airport.
