Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport- BTJ-Sultan Iskandar Muda
Situated in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport is one of the major airports 8.4 miles of the Aceh Province. It is also known as Banda Aceh International Airport. Dedicated as Blangbintang Airport, it was renamed after the 12th sultan of Aceh Province, Sultan Iskandar Muda. It is listed as the 23rd busiest airport in all of Indonesia. The airport had to undergo a major renovation after a tsunami back in 2004. BTJ Airport served as a staging ground for the international emergency aid during the tsunami in Aceh.
Best Time to Visit
To be able to accommodate bigger aircrafts, a 2500-meter long runway was added to the existing airport runway. This is to serve the pilgrims departures in the region making the airport one of the embarkation/disembarkation airports for pilgrimages. The airport had a record high of 1.8-million passengers traffic in 2012 with 17,557 aircraft movements and 10.6 million freight movements. A few years later, in 2016, BTJ Airport was named World's Best Airport for Halal Travellers during the World Halal Tourism Awards.
