Coban: A Destination for the Religious
Coban, Guatemala or Santo Domingo de Coban is a city founded in 1543. It received an imperial city status from Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. During this period, it was briefly called “Ciudad Imperial”. Towards the latter part of the 19th century, it was developed by German coffee growers.
Best Time to Visit
With a subtropical highland climate, the perfect time to visit Coban is anytime of the year. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of January, February, and April. Tourists are least likely to visit in October. One of the most famous events in the city is La Fiesta Nacional Indígena de Guatemala, which is held every end of July. It is a celebration of the country’s native people. One of its highlights is a beauty contest for the country’s native American women. Another event to look forward to is Fiesta Titular, which is held every August 4. Dedicated to Santo Domingo de Guzman, it is the city’s main religious festival.

One of the most famous attractions in the city is Las Victorias National Park, which used to be a finca. It was declared a national park in 1980. Tourists should also visit El Calvario Church, the city’s most sacred spot. It is the focal point of pilgrimages and all sorts of religious activities in the city.
