Francistown International Airport – FRW Botswana

Francistown International Airport is located along the western edge of Francistown, Botswana. Also called the Phillip Gaonwe Matante International Airport, this airport is used by both military and public services. It is one of the four South African international airports. Passenger flights are serviced by Air Botswana, with the airlines reaching destinations like Gaborone, Johannesburg-OR Tambo.

Best Time to Visit

FRW-Botswana International Airport is operated by the Civil Government as well as the Botswana Defence Force. It has two asphalt runways with directions 11/29 and 13/31, respectively. In terms of passenger traffic, it ranks third in the country. While this international airport has no traditional lounge, there are many seating areas for passengers. In 2011, the Francistown International Airport inaugurated its new terminal building. The airport’s old terminal at the eastern end was relegated to the Botswana Defence Force. The old terminal holds a Z12 Transport Squadron and a Z3 Transport Liaison Squadron. Medical air services are also available at the airport. The surrounding city of Francistown is known for its stunning attractions, such as the Tachila Nature Reserveand the Domoshaba Hills and Ruins. You can visit Uncharted Africa’s animal orphanage to see all kinds of local animals.

What to Do & Area Attractions

The Minestone Hotel, Cresta Marang Gardens, and the Diggers Inn are all approximately 10 minutes from the FRW. With almost 2 miles away from the airport, the Cresta Thapama is close to the Galo Mall and offers a fitness room for its guests. Aside from the expedient locations of these hotels, some also offer free airport shuttle services.

While there is no other nearby airport, there are plenty of convenient transport modes in Francistown. There are bus services in the city which will take you to Gaborone from Francistown. For those who want to get around by train, Botswana Railways offer regular services twice daily.
