The airport was built in 1944 and was opened as Mushiroda Airfield by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. After being used for military purpose, it was announced in 1970 that the airport is going to be returned to Japanese control. Its airport code is FUK. In the 1990s, it welcomed several operations by several U.S. airlines including Delta Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Fukuoka Airport’s single runway has led it to become a congested airport. In response, the Japanese government is planning the addition of runways.
