Formerly known as the Grand Island Army Airfield, the military buildings in GRI Airport now serve as hangars and commercial storage. The year 2016 also marked the establishment of a new terminal with Gate 1 featuring a fully closed Jet Bridge to the aircraft. The jetway at GRI Airport was recognized as the first for any airport in the Central Nebraska area. At present, the Central Nebraska Regional Airport operates with two runways with passenger airlines Allegiant Air and American Eagle. The two airlines in GRI offer flights to Las Vegas, Phoenix/Mesa and Dallas/Fort Worth. The GRI was also chosen to be the new Chinook Helicopter Base in 2008.
