Hancock: Michigan’s Mining City
Hancock is located in the northern peninsula of Houghton County in Michigan, U.S. Hancock has constantly been ranked as one of the snowiest cities in the U.S. by The Weather Channel. Back in the 1800s, the land Hancock was on fell under the interest of prospectors they discovered Native Americans had been able to mine significant amounts of copper from mining pits along the mountainside. Today, Hancock, MI is still known for its mining company, Quincy Mining. The nearest airport to Hancock is Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX).

The best time to visit Hancock, Michigan for the best weather is from June to September, where the weather spikes to its highest point in the year. The best month to visit to avoid peak season is in December, the cheapest and least crowded month of the year for the city. Because Hancock also has a large local population of Finns, it also celebrates several Finnish festivals, like the mid-winter festival Heikinpaiva in January.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Quincy Mine is one of Hancock’s oldest sites, having first begun operations in 1846. Because of how integral it was to Hancock’s development, it was also called “Old Reliable”, and the Quincy Mining District became a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. Lower Silver Falls is located in Baraga County and is a small but wonderful site amidst the woods.
